Juror Panel Talk at Gallery | Friday, June 14 2-3pm

Juror | Shan Bryan-Hanson

About:  Shan Bryan-Hanson creates layered, intricate works of art that celebrate fragile and beautiful species through a mixed media practice grounded in painting. Each piece stems from a specific experience: an encounter with a barred owl at the Open Door Bird Sanctuary, the sight of a starling murmuration in Italy, standing amidst her backyard bees as they swarm. From that beginning, she layers references to the art history, the natural world, architectural elements, and geometry. Much of the imagery used in the work is both direct representation of the subject as well as metaphor. Flying insects and birds act as intermediaries between cultivated places and wilderness as well as between material and immaterial worlds. Patterns represent visible and invisible structures as well as the infinite possibilities that result from replication. Shan has worked as an art professor and curator at several institutions, most recently as the director and curator of the Art Galleries at St. Norbert Galleries. Her art has been exhibited in regional and national exhibitions, including a recent solo exhibition at UW-Oshkosh and group exhibitions at the Minneapolis Institute of Art and Design and the Trout Museum of Art. She has received grants for her own art as well as on behalf of arts organizations, including a Percent for Art commision and funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities. She is deeply inspired by the Door County landscape and lives and works in Sturgeon Bay, WI.

Community Mosaic Project | July 12 - August 25

The Unveiling of Mosaic: Friday, July 12 5:30-7pm

Celebrating 17 years this year, the hugely popular Community Mosaic Project is back! This tandem outreach project/fundraiser was conceived in 2007 as a means to promote the visual arts. The display hung along with the Collection Invitational, is constructed of 300 individual works of art, submitted by community members, youth, and established and emerging artists of all skill levels. Don't miss your chance to purchase a piece of this year's project - throughout the duration of the exhibit, the general public has the opportunity to purchase one of the 300 works; all proceeds benefit the non-profit organization. For updates, details or participation information, please call 920.854.2210 or check out our mosaic page here. Canvases for the project are generously donated by the Artists Guild LLC in Sturgeon Bay.

Thank you in advance, for your contributions to this year's project! We are especially grateful to the Artists Guild, LLC, owned by Jeff and Sarah Bradley, for the contribution of canvases for this community event. We encourage you to patronize this business in return for their generous support of our organization; please remember to mention that you heard about them from the Hardy!
