Community Mosaic Project

Community Mosaic Project

The concept behind the Community Mosaic Project, which was launched in 2008 and is now in its fourth year, was twofold -- to raise awareness of the arts by reaching out to the local community and encouraging participation from any member of the community, and to provide the Hardy with funds through the sale of miniature artworks. The Project is displayed during the months of July and August, in conjunction with the Hardy's annual Collection Invitational exhibit and consists, on average, of 300 6-inchby 6-inch canvases that create a large-scale mosaic.

For the 2011 Mosaic Project, the Hardy Gallery has one again teamed up with Sturgeon Bay's Premiere Winsor & Newton Art Centre, the Artists Guild LLC, to provide a free, 6-inch by 6-inch Winsor & Newton canvas for any individual who is interested in participating in the Community Mosaic Project.

There are no restrictions regarding subject matter or the kinds of materials one can use to create their own work of art, except that it must be appropriate for display at the gallery, created using the canvas supplies, and must not exceed the 6-inch by 6-inch dimension. In addition, participants must complete an Artist Statement Form that will accompany the finished piece. These forms are available at the Hardy Gallery office and gallery in Ephraim, the Artists Guild LLC in Sturgeon Bay, and the Mill Road Gallery in Sister Bay. Canvases must be returned on or before Monday, June 27, 2011 to any of the above locations.

Once all 300-plus canvases are collected, all of the works are constructed into a colorful mosaic, which is hung concurrently with the Hardy's popular Collection Invitational Exhibition. At the conclusion of the six-week exhibit, the mosaic will be disassembled and restored to individual canvases. Each artwork is assigned a number, and throughout the duration of the exhibit, the public will be invited to purchase a number in anticipation of owning a piece of art. $25 will by one 6-inch by 6-inch original artwork as well as cover the cost of shipping the work - a price that we hope is within everyone's means. The number(s) purchased corresponding to the number on the artwork(s) will be sent directly to the purchaser. The exciting part is not knowing which canvas you will receive! All sales from the donated canvases will benefit the non-profit Hardy Gallery.
