I have always loved the making of art. This has led me to a career in art education and after years of teaching, I am still fascinated with the process. Being able to create a beautiful painting, by combining my knowledge and skill, is always a satisfying and sometimes surprising experience.
I paint in watercolors and oils. Each media has its own strengths and challenges and builds on the other. I often paint a watercolor in preparation for a large oil painting; but occasionally an oil painting will lead to a series of watercolors.
This year, Door County has been the inspiration for a series of landscape paintings. I try to combine the natural visual experience... autumn color, or dramatic light effects, with abstract design... line, color, shape texture... to create something new. My loose painterly style gives my work a sense of energy and movement. The finished painting is a visual interpretation of something I have experienced; designed for impact; and painted in a free personal style. |
