The Hardy’s first book, The Community Mosaic Project: Complete Artworks 2008-2009, is now available for purchase! This book collects the thoughts and writings behind works of art from the first two years of our popular community outreach event, the Community Mosaic Project.
The idea for the Community Mosaic Project book was conceived in early 2009, when the response to inaugural event was overwhelming. "It quickly became evident that we had a runaway success with this idea," says Elizabeth Meissner-Gigstead, Executive Director of the Hardy, "but it was a challenge to give the public access to the writings which accompanied the works of art. These statements often help people connect to the works on another level—something that is key to our mission as a community arts organization.”
The book is a unique memento of the Peninsula’s vibrant visual arts scene as well as the greater Door County community. It includes testimonials from participants, a forward written by esteemed Door County artist Charles L. Peterson, a behind-the-scenes look at the making and implementation of the project, and images of over 650 works of art. The artists and works, each of which has been included in the Hardy Gallery’s Community Mosaic Project display, are from across the spectrum of the Peninsula and beyond: local youth, professional artists, Sunday painters, annual tourists, and aspiring artists of all skill levels and ages. It is a testament to the celebration of art and community that is the annual Community Mosaic Project.
We hope to be able to continue the book project for the 2010 & 2011 projects, so if you participated in this year's project, stay tuned for that news!
